Who builds Fix42
I'm Kingsley Michael, and I build and run Fix42 on my own under Centenum Technologies. There is no team behind it: the same person writes the tools, fixes the bugs and reads the messages that come in. You can read a bit more on the about page.
It started as a place for small utilities I kept reaching for: a viewer for CSV files that are too big to open comfortably in a spreadsheet, a JSON formatter that tells you where the error is, a way to merge two PDFs without installing anything. It has grown a lot since, but the idea has not changed. Each tool should do one job, work without an account, and get out of your way.
How tools get added
Most new tools start as a request. When the search box finds nothing, it offers to send a tool request, and people also ask through the feedback button and the contact page. When several people ask for something similar, or for a format an existing tool does not handle yet, that is usually what gets built next. Plenty of requests end up as a new option on an existing tool rather than a new page. Tools that do not work well enough get fixed, and occasionally retired.
What runs in your browser and what does not
Not every tool works the same way, and that matters if your file is private. The text tools, calculators, bioinformatics tools, Markdown converters, PDF signer and image combiner run entirely in your browser, so nothing you type or open is sent anywhere.
Other jobs need software that does not run well in a browser tab. Video conversion uses FFmpeg and PDF compression uses Ghostscript, and the PDF merger, splitter and password tools also do their work on the server. Those tools upload your file to the Fix42 server, process it there and send the result back. The tools index marks every tool one way or the other, and the privacy policy explains how uploaded files are handled.
