Worked Example: Why Three Emojis Count as Ten Characters

Click 👍, then ❤️, then 🏳️‍🌈, and press "Copy" on Your Collection. You get three emojis on the clipboard, but they are not three characters under the hood:

• 👍 thumbs up is one code point, U+1F44D.
• ❤️ red heart is two: U+2764 (heavy black heart) plus U+FE0F, a variation selector that asks for the colour emoji style instead of a plain text symbol.
• 🏳️‍🌈 rainbow flag is four: white flag U+1F3F3, U+FE0F, a zero width joiner U+200D, and rainbow U+1F308. Devices that know the sequence draw one flag; older ones show a white flag next to a rainbow.

That is 7 code points. In JavaScript, where most web character counters are written, "👍❤️🏳️‍🌈".length is 10, because code points above U+FFFF take two UTF-16 units each. This is why a bio or post with a few emojis can hit a character limit sooner than you expect, and why deleting one emoji sometimes takes two or three presses of Backspace.

Limits of this keyboard: search matches the English emoji names only (searching "heart" finds 20 emojis, "love" finds just two), there is no skin tone picker, and how an emoji looks depends on your device's emoji font, so a newer emoji can show as an empty box on an older phone. Recently used emojis and your collection reset when you reload the page.
