How IP Geolocation Actually Works
An IP address is not a GPS coordinate. Geolocation databases work by mapping blocks of addresses to the organizations that own them and the regions where those blocks are deployed. When a provider registers a range of addresses, that registration, combined with routing data, ISP records, and observed network behavior, lets a database estimate roughly where addresses in the range are used. The lookup you run here queries one of those databases and returns its best guess, which is why the result centers on a city or region rather than pinpointing a building.
That distinction matters for how much you should trust the coordinates on the map. For a home or business broadband connection, city-level accuracy is common and reasonably reliable. Mobile connections are far looser, because carriers route large numbers of subscribers through a handful of regional gateways. A phone in a suburb can appear at the coordinates of a data center a hundred kilometres away. The latitude and longitude returned are usually the center of the mapped area, not the actual location of the device.
What a Lookup Can and Can't Reveal
Reliably available: the owning ISP or hosting company, the autonomous system (AS) number that identifies their network, the country, and usually the city or region. What an IP lookup cannot give you is a street address, the name of the person using the connection, or anything about what they were doing. Anyone claiming an IP alone reveals someone's identity or exact home is overstating what the data supports.
Results are also easily masked. A VPN, proxy, or Tor exit node makes traffic appear to originate from the intermediary's server, so the location you see belongs to that service, not the user. Corporate networks and cloud platforms behave the same way: an address owned by a major hosting company almost always points to a data center rather than a person. When the ISP field reads like a hosting or VPN provider, treat the geographic result as the location of infrastructure, not an individual.
