How Video Compression Actually Works

A video file is a long sequence of frames, and most of the time very little changes from one frame to the next: the background of a talking-head clip stays almost identical for seconds at a time. Modern codecs like H.264 exploit this by storing only the differences between frames instead of every full picture, then throwing away fine detail the eye is unlikely to miss. Compression is the process of tuning how aggressively that detail is discarded. Push it gently and the file barely shrinks but looks flawless; push it hard and the file becomes tiny but softer, with visible blocky artifacts in busy scenes.

Two knobs control this behind the scenes. The first is CRF (Constant Rate Factor), which you can think of as a single quality dial rather than a size target. A lower CRF means higher quality and a bigger file; a higher CRF means more compression and a smaller file. The encoder then spends however many bits are needed to hit that quality level, using fewer bits on simple scenes and more on complex, fast-moving ones. The second knob is bitrate, the amount of data allotted to each second of video. Lowering the bitrate directly shrinks the file, but starve a detailed scene of bits and quality drops. Our compression presets translate the plain-language levels below into appropriate CRF and bitrate settings for you, so you never have to touch the raw numbers.

The compression level you choose sets that quality-versus-size balance: High Quality trims roughly 30-40% for archiving and professional use, Medium (the recommended setting) reaches around 50-60% with a barely perceptible quality change, Low reaches 70-80% for quick email sharing, and Very Low pushes 80-90% for the smallest possible file. Separately, lowering the resolution (for example from 1080p down to 720p) reduces the pixel count itself and can shave off another chunk of size, which is worthwhile when the video will only ever be viewed on a phone screen where the extra pixels are wasted anyway.
