How Photo-to-Doodle Conversion Works

The three line-art styles (Sketch, Pencil, and Marker) are built on edge detection. The tool analyses your photo and looks for places where brightness or colour changes sharply, which is where the real edges of a subject usually are: the outline of a face, the boundary of a building, the folds in fabric. Those edges become the lines of the doodle, while flat areas are left blank, giving you a clean drawing instead of a shaded photo. The Line Intensity slider (1-10) controls how sensitive that detection is: lower values keep only the strongest, most confident edges for a subtle sketch, while higher values pick up finer detail and texture for a bolder, busier result.

Each style tunes the same idea differently. Sketch is the fastest and produces crisp, technical outlines. Pencil softens the strokes for a hand-drawn, graphite feel. Marker thickens and darkens the lines for a high-contrast, poster-like look. The fourth option, Cartoon AI, works differently: it uses a CartoonGAN neural network to redraw your whole photo in a colourful cartoon style, keeping colour and shading rather than reducing the image to outlines, so it takes a little longer to process and ignores the intensity slider.

Your image is uploaded to our processing service to run these operations, so the conversion is not done inside your browser. Uploads accept JPG, PNG, and WebP files up to 40 MB, and every result is returned as a PNG you can download immediately. PNG is a good match here because line art is mostly flat colour and sharp edges, which the format compresses without the blocky artefacts a JPG would add around thin lines.

For the cleanest doodles, start with a well-lit photo that has a clear subject and good separation from the background. Busy, low-contrast, or very dark images give edge detection less to work with and can produce noisy lines; nudging the intensity down often helps in those cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Sketch, Pencil, and Marker styles?

All three use edge detection to turn your photo into line art, but they finish the lines differently. Sketch produces crisp, technical outlines and is the fastest. Pencil softens the strokes for a hand-drawn graphite feel. Marker thickens and darkens the lines for a bold, high-contrast poster look.

What does the Line Intensity slider do?

It controls how sensitive the edge detection is. Lower values keep only the strongest edges for a clean, minimal sketch, while higher values pick up finer detail and texture for a bolder, busier drawing. If a photo produces noisy lines, try lowering the intensity. The slider does not apply to the Cartoon AI style.

How is Cartoon AI different from the other styles?

Cartoon AI uses a CartoonGAN neural network to redraw your entire photo in a colourful cartoon style, keeping colour and shading instead of reducing the image to outlines. Because it runs a machine-learning model, it takes a little longer to process and does not use the intensity slider.

What file types and sizes can I upload?

You can upload JPG, PNG, or WebP images up to 40 MB. Every result is returned as a PNG, which keeps line art sharp because it compresses flat colours and hard edges without the blocky artefacts a JPG can add around thin lines.

Is my photo processed in my browser or uploaded?

Your image is uploaded to our processing service to run edge detection or the CartoonGAN model, so the conversion is not done entirely in your browser. Uploaded images are used only to generate your doodle and return the result.

How do I get the cleanest doodle result?

Start with a well-lit photo that has a clear subject and good contrast against its background. Edge detection works best when subject boundaries are obvious. Busy, dark, or low-contrast images give the algorithm less to work with, so lowering the line intensity often produces a cleaner result.
