For length, weight, and volume, this converter uses a base-unit approach: every unit is defined by an exact factor relative to a reference unit (the meter, the kilogram, and the liter). Temperature is the exception, because Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin do not share a common zero point. Why is temperature converted with a formula instead of a factor?
Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin have different zero points, so converting between them requires an offset as well as a scaling ratio. Zero degrees Celsius equals 32 degrees Fahrenheit, not zero — which is why you cannot simply multiply a temperature the way you would a distance or a weight.
