Resume Writing Tips

What is ATS?

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are software used by 99% of Fortune 500 companies to filter resumes. They scan for keywords, proper formatting, and relevant experience. Our templates are designed to pass these systems while still looking professional to human recruiters.

Use Action Verbs

Start bullet points with strong action verbs: Led, Developed, Implemented, Achieved, Reduced, Increased, Managed, Created, Designed, Optimized. Avoid passive language like "Responsible for" or "Worked on."

Quantify Achievements

Use numbers whenever possible: "Increased sales by 25%", "Managed team of 8 engineers", "Reduced costs by $50K annually". Metrics make your impact concrete and memorable.

Tailor for Each Job

Customize your resume for each application. Match keywords from the job description, reorder bullet points to highlight relevant experience, and adjust your summary to align with the role's requirements.

How This Resume Builder Works

You fill in structured sections (personal details, a professional summary, work experience, education, skills, and optional projects and certifications) and the live preview on the right re-renders as you type. Switch between the seven layouts (Professional, Modern, Minimal, ATS-Safe, Executive, Developer, and Creative) with a single click; your content stays intact, only the design changes, so you can try several looks before committing. The ATS-Safe and Minimal templates use single-column layouts and standard fonts that parse cleanly, while Modern and Creative add colour and sidebars for roles where visual polish helps.

The built-in ATS Score checker runs a checklist against your draft: it confirms you have contact details, a full name, a summary of adequate length, at least one described role, an education entry, a populated skills section, and bullet points in your experience. Paste a job description into it and the tool highlights which keywords from that posting appear in your resume and which are missing, the fastest way to tailor an application. The optional AI Assistant can draft a summary, suggest skills for your target title, or rewrite bullet points; when you use it, the text needed for that request is sent to our server to generate the suggestion, and the wording is returned to you to edit or discard.

When you are happy with the result, Download PDF exports a print-ready file with no watermark and no sign-up. Your draft is saved automatically in your browser as you work, so you can close the tab and return later without losing progress. There are no page limits or paywalls: every template and export is free.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should my resume be?
For most professionals, 1 page is ideal. If you have 10+ years of relevant experience or are in academia, 2 pages is acceptable. Never exceed 2 pages unless specifically requested.
Should I include my photo?
In the US and UK, photos are not recommended due to anti-discrimination laws. In many European and Asian countries, photos are expected. Research the norms for your target market.
What format should I use - PDF or Word?
PDF is generally preferred as it preserves formatting across devices. However, some older ATS systems prefer Word documents. If the job posting specifies a format, use that. When in doubt, PDF is safer.
Is my data secure?
Your resume is saved locally in your browser (localStorage) and is not stored on our servers, so your draft stays on your device between visits. The one exception is the optional AI features: when you ask the AI Assistant to draft or improve text, the relevant content is sent to our server to generate that suggestion. If you would rather keep everything on-device, simply skip the AI buttons and type your content in directly.
What does the ATS Score actually measure?
It checks the structural things applicant tracking systems rely on: whether you have contact details, a name, a summary of reasonable length, described work experience, education, a filled-in skills section, and bullet points. If you paste a job description, it also scores how many of that posting's keywords appear in your resume. A high score means your resume is easy for software to parse. It does not judge the quality of your writing, so still proofread and tailor the content yourself.
Which template should I choose?
For most applications, especially at large companies that filter with software, pick the ATS-Safe, Professional, or Minimal template, since their clean single-column structure parses reliably. The Developer template suits engineering roles, Executive fits senior leadership, and Creative works for design or marketing portfolios where standing out visually is an advantage. You can switch templates at any time without re-entering your information, so it costs nothing to compare a few.
