Most language apps quiz you with multiple choice, which trains recognition: you learn to spot the right answer when it's shown to you. Producing a sentence yourself is a different skill, and it's the one you actually need in a conversation. Our practice tool asks you to type the full German translation of an English phrase (or the reverse), then scores your answer against the expected sentence and shows you exactly where you diverged.
That struggle to retrieve a word before seeing the answer is what cognitive scientists call the "testing effect": retrieval practice builds far stronger memory than re-reading or recognizing. What the CEFR Levels Mean
The practice phrases are organized by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the standard scale used by the Goethe-Institut, TestDaF, and European employers:
A1-A2 · Beginner
Greetings, ordering food, directions, everyday phrases. Where everyone starts, and enough to get around Germany as a visitor.
B1-B2 · Independent
Opinions, work conversations, and the level most German employers and universities ask for. B1 is also the level required for German citizenship.
C1-C2 · Proficient
Nuanced arguments, idioms, and academic German. C-level phrases push word order, subjunctive, and connectors that separate fluent speakers from advanced learners.
Both Directions

How to Get the Most Out of It
- Short daily sessions beat long weekly ones: ten minutes a day builds retention faster than an hour on Sunday.
- Say your answer out loud before typing: it doubles the practice as pronunciation work.
- Don't fear the hint button: a hint followed by a correct answer is better learning than a wrong guess you never revisit.
- Move up a level when you score above ~80% consistently; staying comfortable is the slowest way to learn.
